IDEAS Lado B

Analog origin

Many songs of this album took 10 years or more and went through multiple changes, versions and later editions. When producing it I did not want them to sound like radio hits (that tomorrow feel meaningless) or to be so timeless that lost the connection here and now in a musical context that went from the conceptual album to the decontextualized single.

“Lado B” (B Side) refers to the cassette, my way of connecting with music as a ’90s kid. It brings me back to the physical world awakens my nostalgia and represents the dualities of life. Usually the songs recorded on the B side were the least promoted and especially on vinyl records, half of the albums. Through my process I wanted to encourage others to recognize and why not, to heal by exposing it without filters or prejudices.

Darkness and tarot

In the last stage of production I felt that the project was out of control. It sounded like an experimental collage without a common thread until I had an epiphany with the tarot that resignified everything.

We met with friends to drink something outdoors and by the end of the night a stranger offered us to read the Tarot. I asked my friends permission to try it and they also thought it was funny. My vital state it was read in such an accurate way that I dared to ask “Where is my art going?”. And the future showed “the hermit”: a card that shows the figure (as introspective as retrospective) of an old man illuminating his journey with a lamp.

From that day on I focused my energy on creating something new and escape from that sentence. That experience was such an impact that at the end of the production the album reconstructed the path of the tarot. My story begins with a disappointment resulting from my naivete and ends with the desire to be one with the world.

I just had to accommodate each theme with its equivalent in the Major Arcana (which slightly modified my original list) and thus achieved a universal consistency: The album’s path follows each major arcana of the tarot and anyone can project themselves on it. The path at times becomes long and contradictory but necessary to enlighten us.

The final presentation

I definitely couldn’t expect anybody to go through a twenty-songs-album so the smartest decision was once again to follow the tarot: in three parts of 7 songs, keeping the track 22 (the card 22 could also be the letter 0 in the tarot) as extra.

Three mini albums integrate “Lado B” however each one has a slightly different perspective: The first seven songs are all soloist tracks, including hip hop, rock and a lot of pop as my presentation. The second part shows not only my hidden side but also that of my companions. The last part have only remixes and new versions. Each one can be heard independently or a circular whole.

Origen análogo

Muchas canciones del álbum tomaron 10 años o más y atravesaron un sinfín de cambios, versiones y posteriores ediciones. Al producirlo no quería que suenen como un éxito de radio hoy (y que mañana no tengan sentido) o sean tan atemporales que olviden el aquí y ahora.

“Lado B” refiere al cassette, mi forma de conectar con la música siendo un chico de los ’90. Me devuelve al plano físico, despierta mi nostalgia y representa las dualidades de la vida. Normalmente las canciones grabadas en los lado B eran las menos publicitadas y paradójicamente (en discos de vinilo) la mitad del álbum. A través del proceso quería animarnos a reconocer y porqué no, sanar al exponerlo sin filtros ni prejuicios.

Oscuridad y tarot

La última etapa de producción por Febrero de 2019 me encontró con la sensación de que el proyecto se me había ido de las manos. “Lado B” sonaba a collage experimental sin un hilo conductor hasta que tuve una epifanía con el tarot que lo resignificó todo.

Una tarde nos reunimos con amigas a tomar algo al aire libre y hacia el final de la noche un desconocido ofreció tirarnos las cartas. Me pareció divertido y pedí permiso para probar. Mi estado vital fue leído de una forma tan acertada que me atreví a preguntar “¿Hacia dónde va mi arte?”. Y en el futuro apareció “el ermitaño”: la carta que muestra la figura (tan introspectiva como retrospectiva) de un anciano iluminando con un lámpara su recorrido transitado.

Desde ese día en adelante enfoqué mi energía en crear algo nuevo y escapar de esa sentencia. Fue tal el impacto de esa experiencia que al terminar la producción el álbum reconstruía el camino del Tarot: mi historia comenzando por una decepción fruto de mi ingenuidad y terminando con el deseo de ser uno con el todo.

Solo restó acomodar cada tema con su equivalente en los Arcanos Mayores (lo cual modificó ligeramente mi lista original) y así logré una consistencia universal: El recorrido del álbum sigue el orden de cada arcano mayor y cualquiera puede proyectarse en él. El camino por momentos se hace largo y contradictorio pero necesario para iluminarnos.

La presentación final

No podía pretender que mi gente atraviese un álbum de 20 temas por lo cual la decisión más inteligente fue una vez más, seguir al tarot: en 3 partes ciclos, guardando la canción 22 (la carta 22 también pude ser la carta 0 en el tarot) como extra. Así evité caer en una seguidilla de singles fuera de contexto o ahogar a mis oyentes con un mega album.

Los tres mini álbumes de siete canciones que integran Lado B tienen un enfoque ligeramente diferente: Las primeros siete canciones son solista, incluyendo hip hop, rock y mucho pop como carta de presentación. La segunda parte muestra el lado más oscuro y el de mis acompañantes. La última parte solo tiene remixes y versiones. Cada una puede escucharse independientemente o como una totalidad.
